The nation’s capital has once again proven its culinary prowess, with several D.C. chefs and restaurants securing finalist spots in the prestigious 2025 James Beard Awards. The announcement, following the initial semifinalist list revealed in January, highlights the growing influence of Washington’s dining scene on the national stage.
At the forefront is Mita, a vegetarian Latin American restaurant located in D.C.’s vibrant Shaw neighborhood. Lauded for its innovative plant-based cuisine, Mita has been named a finalist for Best New Restaurant in the U.S., placing it among just ten contenders nationwide. The accolade follows the restaurant’s Michelin star achievement in December, further cementing its reputation.
In other notable nominations:
-
Scott Drewno and Danny Lee, the visionary duo behind The Fried Chicken Collective (which includes Anju, Chiko, and I Egg You), are finalists for Outstanding Restaurateur.
-
Susan Bae of Moon Rabbit is recognized in the Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker category, celebrating her artistry in dessert creation.
-
Henji Cheung, chef at Queen’s English, and Carlos Delgado, who helms Causa and Amazonia, are both finalists for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic — a competitive regional category.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the James Beard Awards. Winners across all 25 categories will be revealed during a ceremony at the Lyric Opera in Chicago on June 16.
As D.C.’s culinary talents continue to garner national acclaim, all eyes will be on Chicago next week to see which of the capital’s rising stars take home the coveted honors.
